Pollution monitoring

The environmental consent for activities in the Port of Oxelösund regulates the effect on the environment our activities may have. Air quality, noise levels and emissions in water are checked according to a pre-arranged programme.

Air

The measuring of air quality is regularly performed via erected meters. If the quantity of dangerous particles in the air increases an automatic alarm sounds in the port. The air then can be analysed to determine where the particles have come from and if we can rectify the problem. Sometimes the alarm sounds for reasons out of the control of the port, forest fires in Russia and sandstorms in the Sahara can affect the sensitive equipment.

It is very important to know the direction of the wind to find the source of the emission. The results of dangerous particles in the air are very low. The area of the archipelago, Aspvreten, outside the city Trosa has a level of 8 μg of dangerous particles/m³ of air, in Oxelösund the level is 12-15 μg/m³ of air. The limit within the EU is 40 μg/m³ of air.

Noise

The noise level is measured four times a year. Our activities are usually just under the permitted level of 55 dBA during the day and 45 dBA at night. This can be compared with a normal conversation level of between

50-60 dBA.

Water

Water samples are taken twice a year in three different places. Rain water is analysed for its metal content. The result is normally well under the permitted levels.
