Safety measures
for the loading and unloading of vessels
The following safety rules for loading
and unloading apply in the port. The rules are based on recommendations from
the Working environment laws, Vessel safety laws and ILO’s “Safety and health
in dock work”.
- A safety net shall be placed under the gangplank.
The net shall be fixed so it prevents falling between the vessel and
quayside.

The deckshall be kept clean with no risk of
slipping.

Hatches and planking shall be placed and allow
enough room for crane marshal.
- Registering of dangerous goods (according to
IMDG-code) and where those goods are stowed, shall be given to the foreman
responsible.
- Working platforms for the crane marshal shall
have a protection grid.
- Dring section loading or unloading a safety net
shall be placed to prevent people or cargo from falling.
- On RO-RO vessels
guard rails shall be erected around lift shafts to prevent vehicles
falling down. Use of lifts is only allowed when stated on the lift
certificate.
- With the running of fuel burning engines the
exhaust fumes must de dispersed efficiently.
- There shall be safe points of access, welllit
during periods of darkness.
- If possible the crew and stevedores shall not
work in the hold at the same time.
- Only those crew member taking part in the work of
loading/unloading should be in the cargo handling area.
- All shall wear reflective clothing and personal
protective equipment.
- The patent hatch when open shall be secured with
a mechanical locking device.
