Capacity for Large Vessels – Lower Costs and More Reliable Deliveries

As part of Oxchange, the Port of Oxelösund is being developed to accommodate more and larger vessels. Improved accessibility enables us to handle greater cargo volumes with every port call.

The ongoing investments, totalling nearly SEK 700 million, are a key part of this development. An extended quay, new cranes, dredging of the harbour basin, and modernised rail infrastructure create the conditions for faster and more efficient cargo handling. This means a port where every metre of quay and every square metre of storage space can be leveraged to generate greater business value.

Together, these improvements are transforming the economics and reliability of sea transport. By moving larger cargo volumes in a single shipment, transportation costs can be spread across more tonnes, resulting in a lower cost per unit. At the same time, the need for frequent port calls is reduced, simplifying planning and decreasing dependence on tight shipping schedules. Another key benefit is greater stability throughout the supply chain, as fewer but larger deliveries make planning easier and improve the synchronization of inbound cargo with onward distribution or production.

This creates a more predictable and resilient logistics flow over time. In many ports, capacity is constrained by factors such as water depth, available space, or accessibility. At the Port of Oxelösund, capacity is instead a competitive advantage, where high cargo volumes and the ability to accommodate larger vessels become powerful tools for creating more efficient and robust transport solutions.
